When preparing your bag of essentials, pretend you are staying overnight somewhere. Pack a pair of pyjamas, a change of clothes, your medication, toiletries, and shower essentials. 

One item people rarely think about is a shower curtain. If your new home has a bathtub/shower combo, you will need one and will definitely want to shower after a long day moving!

Place the Items You Will Need First in a Clear Plastic Bin

Trust us when we say that clear plastic bins will be your best friend during a move. You will know exactly what is inside each bin and easily identify the items you need. Some of the first things you will likely need include clean bedding and pillows, cleaning supplies, a toolkit, phone chargers, other electronic devices, and snacks and water. 

Label What’s in the Box and What Room They’ll Go in

Organizing your moving boxes and creating a system will make the process so much easier, especially if you have friends helping or are working with professional movers. One way to organize your belongings is to use a colour-coding system. 

Select a colour for each room in the new house and mark that colour on every box that will go there. You might use yellow for the master bedroom, green for the kitchen, etc. 

Using a numbered system is another method you should consider. Create a master list to record the contents of each box along with its number, and then assign that box to a room. This way, you will know exactly where everything is and where it belongs. 

Take a Photo of How Your Electronics are Connected 

Before you unplug your computer area or entertainment setup, make sure to take some photos that show how everything is connected. Then you can unplug, pack it all together, and label it. Reconnecting all your electronics will be simple to do, especially if you have photos to refer to.

Don’t forget all the cords, accessories, and codes. There is nothing more frustrating than getting everything set up in your new home and being unable to find the remote.

Pre-Clean Your New Kitchen and Bathroom Prior to Moving

It is the best feeling to move straight into a new home knowing that the high-traffic areas are clean. Start with the fridge. This will probably be the first thing you use when moving into a new home. 

Work your way through the kitchen and bathrooms, deeply cleaning from top to bottom in each space. Don’t worry about the floors. You and your movers will be in and out, and you can take care of that later.
