Uh Oh! Concerned About Moving Long Distance?

Anonymous

Moving to a new city or province can be an exciting prospect - it means a new job, a new home, and new beginnings. Having said that, it can also be extremely stressful. Uprooting your whole life and moving long distances is no walk in the park.

There’s no need to panic, however, because by doing some careful thinking, strategic planning, and covering all your bases, you can make your move a lot easier. Below are just a few moving tips you need to know first.

Plan and Schedule

Planning and scheduling are two of the most important things you have to tackle while preparing for a
long-distance move. It’s important to start this process early on, as leaving it too late will only add more stress.

There are a few things you need to consider before you begin contacting moving companies and scheduling moving times. For example:

  • What is your moving date?
  • How complicated will the moving process be?
  • How far are you moving?

Once you’ve figured out these essentials, you can arrange a date for your chosen moving company to come in, or schedule a time to pick up a moving vehicle if you plan to drive yourself. Once this is figured out, you can begin planning and scheduling everything else around it!

This includes things like garage sales, cancelling or changing any mail or delivery subscriptions, cleaning your house or apartment, making minor repairs, and throwing out anything you don’t want to keep.

Look Into Storage Options

While you’re moving to a new province or moving across the country, you’re going to need storage in transit. Storage in transit simply refers to the storage you use to keep your belongings in while you’re in the process of moving. Storage may be needed for as little as a couple of days, or as long as a few months.

Generally, the easiest option for storage in transit is to arrange it through the moving company you’ve hired, which is a service most companies will offer. However, you should inquire into how they handle storage in transit first. You want to be sure that the facility they are using is as secure as possible as well as climate-controlled to protect your belongings.

In some cases, your company may be using a third-party storage facility. This can be an issue as third-party companies tend to take less care of your belongings, which can result in damaged furniture or lost items. You may want to arrange your own storage in transit or do some background research on the third party so that you can make an informed choice.

How Does the Long-Distance Moving Process Differ From the Local Moving Process?

It’s important to consider the differences between a long-distance move and a
local move, especially when you are choosing a moving company. Part of this is because many moving companies are not available for long-distance moves.

Another difference is the cost. If you are moving to a new province, you are going to be charged more and the costs will be calculated differently compared to a local move, which normally just depends on time and the amount of labour.

Long-distance movers generally calculate costs by distance, amount of items being moved, the weight of those items combined, and the overall fuel used. There is also more likely to be more paperwork involved including licenses, certifications, and different insurance.
